Default Starter stuck, won't stop starting!!!

I have a 1995 LT1 coupe.

I've been having weird starting problems lately, it all started when I had a bad battery, it kept dying out of nowhere, I'd jump it and it would work fine for a few days, then just die out of nowhere. I replaced the battery and that problem stopped.

Now I've been plagued with starting problems, sometimes I turn the key and absolutely nothing happens with the starter, no click, no nothing (the fans turn on in the car though), I turn the key on and off a few times and it finally works (it's not the key, I have 2 and they both do the same). The other day the starter started up but it just kept running, it wouldn't turn off, even after turning the car off and taking the key out. I had to unplug the battery but the starter would just keep going again after plugging it back in, so I tapped the starter with a hammer and put the battery back and it fixed that problem, beating things with a hammer seems to do that. But the car still only starts once in a while... What do you guys think it is? is there any way to fix this without having to buy a new starter?

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid/relay.

I had this happen and repaired the internal solenoid switch contacts in the starter.

BTW, the Chevrolet starter is actually a Toyota Nippon V6 High Torque reduction geared Starter

I believe the repair parts are only about $20. Alot cheaper than buying a rebuilt starter

Here is a parts link:

The continuous starter happened to me too. I had to disconnect the battery to kill it. It kept spinning weather the car was on of off and even without the key. I too gave it a few good smacks with a hammer and reconnected the battery and it worked. I'm still running that same starter and has not happened again.

I think the solenoid was temporarily stuck.

The relay and the solenoid are 2 separate parts correct?
So the relay is probably good, I just need to fix the solenoid?
95BLKVette, thanks for the link, I'm not so good at this stuff so I don't know if I should try it or not.
How much do you guys think it would cost me for a whole new starter? know of any good places to buy one cheap?
The shop told me $300 plus 1 hour of labor at $70 per hour, too expensive for me at the moment.

I got mine at an Advance Auto for $35.00 about 5 years ago. Other than that one time it kept running, I have not had any problems with it.

Hope that's your problem...me, I think you may have a bad ignition switch.

Disconnect negative battery cable.

Remove small cable from starter.

Reconnect negative battery cable.

If starter continues to run it's not the ignition switch, it's then probably the starter solenoid contacts are welded together.

If the starter doesn't run its probably the ignition switch.

Let us know what happens.

Default Rebuild before you replace

You will save a bunch of money by getting your starter rebuilt. I had a lot of grit and grime inside my starter; after it was rebuilt I had no other problems.

Default starter

starter relay and solenoid are the same part. some call it a relay, and some call it a solenoid.
There is a relay in the solenoid and a solenoid in the relay.
the relay energizes, and the solenoid pulls the starter gear into the flywheel, and when that happens, makes contact and energizes the starter motor at the same time, allowing the motor torque to throw out the gear into the flywheel. The motor continuesto run until the engine starts, and you release the key, allowing the solenoid spring to pull the gear out of the flywheel, and the engine accelerates to idle.
PHEW!

The starter comes off with by removing two nuts and two bolts. Very easy to do. Replacing the solenoid is also very easy....can be a bit dirty due to grime on the outside of the starter, but quite easy to fix. Or you can take it to a rebuild shop and for (I think) about $100 they will rebuild it. This should include new solenoid, brushes, and cleaned.

Good luck with it.
