I'm stumped.. Having a problem with my 87 coupe... when I'm driving and I decide to accelerate hard.. I hear what sounds like a pinging.. type of noise coming from under the car... If I pop the hood and open up the throttle the engine sounds nice and strong no pinging.. Just when I'm driving.. and it seems to be coming from under the car not the engine compartment.. Any idea's??? It's very annoying... Also one more question.. Does anyone know what sensor is located on the driver side, right near the spark plugs.. towards the front of block.. single green wire plugged into it????
I had the same exact noise coming from my 89. I changed to 93-94 octane gas and bam it has been gone ever since. It too sounded like it was coming from under the car, might just be the way the sound travels?????
Try a higher octane gas and let me know. Also if you have a friend with a laptop and some diagnostics equip. That would really tell you if it was knock.
Later.
Oh yeah and the sensor on the drivers side of the engine is the coolant sensor.
I would check to see if your pre cats or main cat are breaking up.I had the same problem and it went away after I replaced my main cat.But now my precats are breaking up I have that pinging noise again.
