Default Not another 383

My '93 6-speed is going in the shop for a 383 on Monday (hopefully)

My current motor is: LT1 with the LT4 heads and intake, Meziere water pump, K&N filter, 52mm throttle body, GM Hotcam, Exotic Muscle long tubes-no catz flowing through the OEM pipes and mufflers with a PCM for less tune.

They are going to remove my motor and set it up with the same parts as the golen engine service 383 short block. www.golenengineservice.com except with better pistons. I'm going to re-use the LT4 top end and hotcam.

My questions are:

Would it be worth it to port my LT4 heads since I'm still using the hotcam (I really dont want a lopey idle and the hotcam is not too bad)

I currently am running the stock fuel injectors. Do I need larger ones? 26lbs. 30lbs??

Will I need a fuel pressure regulator to bump up pressure or will the larger injectors solve this issue?

This shop has an engine dyno so when they get it together I'm sure I could run it and get it tuned an running right.

Any thoughts???

If done right, porting your heads would certainly gain some HP across the board. The real question is; do you want to pay for it? I would recommend getting Lloyd Elliot on the phone and get his opinion on teh matter. Also, the HotCam is nice in a 350, but that's a baby cam for a 383!

Need? Probably not, especially if you keep the HotCam. However, a bump to LT4 (28lb) or SVO 30lb injectors wouldn't be a bad thing. Talk to you tuner and get their input on the matter as they will make all the difference.

Be careful bumping up the fuel pressure much as this will increase the fuel delivery throughout the entire RPM range, whereas properly sized injectors and good computer tuning can be used to deliver the proper amount of fuel needed at any RPM range. However, having an adjustable regulator is nice to have and pretty cheap...

Man, I wish I was in your sitsuation right now. Please dont leave all that power that ported LT4 heads can give you on the table. Your 383 will be begging for more airflow. I also agree on a stronger cam for your set up. Theres great cam designs out there that use wider LSA to keep the lope in check. I mean youve opened your wallet up already, mine as well get all its got to give ya. Good luck man. Look forward to seeing results. Alvin from pcmforless will know about injectors sizes.

BTW, how did it run with your current set up? (Before the 383)

It ran pretty strong. The original tune was way lean so it did not make near the power it should have. Then I got a hold of PCM for Less and sent them data from a couple of dyno runs..It was much better, though I never took it back in to get an "after" dyno run. The shop that I'm going to use this time has an engine dyno, so they will tune it out of the car. I may consider a different cam. I will ask the tech. They build alot of race motors and marine motors for "go fast" boats. I really don't want a very lopey Idle (been there done that when I was in my late teens early 20's I had a '77 "Bandit" Trans Am with a cam, intake,Holley carb and headers etc..) I'm also not lookin' to make a monster motor. I would be happy in the 440hp-450hp range with a Fat tourque curve. I can always install 3.73 or 4.10 gears to make it quicker. I think any more power than that would stress the rest of the drive train. Besides, I think I could play with all but the mightiest of the sporty cars down here. I already killed the M3,M5(400hpV8-not the newer V10) Carrera S4, C-class AMG, Jaguar XJ-R..funny 'cause they all figuered they're supposed to be quicker than a 300hp Vette All at a track of course..They have recently opened up a section of one of the smaller airports for racing here locally in hopes of cutting down on the street racing (thank God)
