OK, i was waiting in line at McDonalds (slowpokes) and my car wanted to die. It had already gotten up to about 220 and the RPM's went from 500-800 while sitting there, it felt like it was choking and wasnt gettin air. It usually idles very smooth at about 6-700 RPM's but i had to apply the gas to keep it from goin out. This was the first time it happened, ive run it since and no problems, what happened? sensor hiccup?
From what I read on this forum it must be a burnt MAF relay. A L98 expert will chime in soon. It doesn't sound like your IAC because your car would be hard to start and have a changing idle in park.
Sounds like your mass air flow sensor is starting to fail. If it does die and won't start just disconnect the MAF connector. This will put it in "limp home" mode. Car Quest auto parts has lifetime warranty on MAF. You may also want to clean your idle air control valve.
if you get a new MAF unit and your problem is still there...bite the bullet and get a overpriced genuine GM part. tried 4 different after market units in my 87, they are good until the 2nd start-up and would throw the stupid code again. finally got the GM unit and problem solved.
she did it again yesterday, it seems to idle just fine when cold and at stoplights but if i have to sit in a line of cars and the temperature gets over 200 oil and 225 coolant then the idle surges between 500-800 rpms.
I hooked mine up to a code checking machine, no codes showing but it says 02 sensor ready "NO" 02 reading at 0. Does that mean the 02 sensor is bad? I wouldv'e thought that would have thrown a code.
Not necessarily. It means the motor is not in Closed Loop so the ECM is ignoring the O2 readings. Check for a Code 13 again which indicates an open in the O2 circuit. Otherwise, monitor after you've reached operating temperature. Some motors will return to Open Loop because the O2 sensor cools off at idle. Run the motor at part throttle and see if switches back to Closed Loop. If it does, is the idle any better? Also check again for Code 45, Rich Exhaust and if no Code, monitor Block Learn at idle - is it below 116 while in Closed Loop?
