I put in a new dist cap and noticed that the firing order was screwed up!! Only had this car 30 days. The firing order was 1,2,8,4,3,6,5,7 I changed it to 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2......... It now has trouble starting like labering to turn over. It was runngin fine (don't know how) Is this firing order that I changed it to correct? DO I have to now change the timing because it was screwed up also to compensate for the firing order mess up? It a 1991 L98 Corvette...
Thanks, but I did get it running. Had to move the dist clockwise , now I have the repair book but for the life of me I can't find the timing. On a 91 L98, there is no vac advance to disconnect. What do I disconnect? I know there must be an electronic connector that needs to be un-plugged. ALso, what is the timing?
Yep...there is a connector to unplug. It is located behing the base of the distributor and has 4 or 5 prongs in a flat pack connector. It's a biatch to get your hands on it to disconnect it.
Thing to do is disconnect it, start the car and set timing between 6-8 degrees BTDC, shut the car off and reconnect it.
Thing is, if the car has a lot of mileage, the balancer mark may be off a few degrees from slippage of the inertia ring. I usually set mine for the most advance with no engine ping...then I don't care where it is set at.
Well found the connector and its not the four pole one behind the dist.. It one connector that comes out of the harness just to the left of the power brake booster. I put all the wire were they should be and also had to remove the dist and move it two teeth counter clock wise to get it in the right position. Re-timed it and now it runs like a mother!! I knew there was somthing not right. I was giving it a tune up when I noticed this today, thought the tune up would bring the power back were I thought it shold be. I'm sure the tune up is helping BUT, the wires not being were they should be is the main thing.
I can't beleave this was running with the firing order at 1,2,8,4,3,6,5,7 when it should have been 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 !!! :mad :mad :smash:
The funny thing is...I had the exact same screwed up firing order on my car!!! :mad :mad It wasn't until I actually changed the plugs/cap/wires that I noticed it. I looked at the manual, began to changed them, then noticed something was terribly wrong. The car seemed to run fine...therefore, I thought the manual was wrong...checked *several* sources before I reconnected them. Ran better in the end.
Your car must have been taken to the same back-woods mechanic that did mine!
