I'm thinking about upgrading my stock 86 with a set of 1.6 roller rockers.
I'm thinking of going with comp cams and upgrading my springs to LT4 springs but I can't seem to find a SA comp cam kit. I've heard on here to only get self aligning rr's and lt4 springs this should be all i need to get the job done i assume....
Anyone know which ones are sa or are there any better sets that will work better in a stock 86 with aluminum heads?
If you are buying aluminum 1.6 RR's you need narrow self aligning. I don't know about the Comp Cam kits but their full roller rocker is called Pro Magnum. If you are unsure I would call them. They may include guide plates.
There was a thread on this a couple weeks ago. Nobobdy with 86 or 87s had SA rockers. Be sure you know what you need before buying. I think Vinnies87 had already bought SAs and ended up selling them.

Looks like your year doesn't use SA and has guideplates.
ok, so sounds like to me I can go with any 1.6 narrow RR full roller or roller tips and I just get the LT4 springs and guide plates.
I'm assuming I can use the stock push rods since I still have a stock cam on my 86 L98. Right?
Any suggestions on brands that are the best for my setup? I heard crane's are quieter. But it seams that majority like comp cam pro mags for the L98 w/aluminum heads.
I've just been through all this with my 86L, and still haven't got it all straight, I can tell you if you go with LT4 springs you need to get the caps and shims too they're a different diameter than stock L98. I called GMPP and they were a big help also agent 86 is an expert on this stuff, If you scroll thru the threads for the last couple of days there's a ton of info on rockers and springs easy to find. Good luck it is confusing.
Yea i did sell the SA's: After tons of research here's my lowdown:
1.6 or 1.5.2 Roller Comp, lt4 #981 springs or ZZ4's comp, hardened pushrods and guideplates and new GM valve seals. (this is the complete setup)
Vinnie, did you need shims and caps like rich needed? And why did you need hardened pushrods? Did you cam it, is that why? I also need to replace my valve seals which is the reason i'm going in there in the first place... hitting two birds with 1 stone.
I'm a newbie when it coms too this, havn't done it yet, just don't want to get in over my head

I went with 1.5.2 RR's. I got shim and caps and replaced all... did need to do some shimming during replacement. No cam change. Harden pushrods are what you currently have now with guide plates (hardened), so you want to keep status quo... Make sure you have a compressor w/spark plug adapter or the rope trick, know TDC #1 setup and the proper adjustment sequence. If this is your first time doing this, there are tons of info here and tips and tricks which would definately be in your best interest to research.

The advice I've recieved most is unless there is damage your stock pushrods should be fine. You will know better when you get in there. Most of the small parts are availible at your locol auto parts stores.
Don't go overboard unless you plan to race it.

But don't forget, you cant tell the stress on the pushrods or internal metal damage, so why take a chance at such a small cost to replace the rods and guide plates... for something that can cause major damage, prevention is well worth the cost.
