Default Sway Bar Diameter and Bushing Question

I measured the sway bars on my '84 last night and the front was 24.7 to 24.9 mm in diameter. All of the sites like Ecklers and VBandP list bushing kits for 24 mm and 26 mm sway bars. Are they usually nearly a mm larger than the size of bushings you are supposed to order?

Did you measure the diameter and divide by 3.14? Or use calipers?

Anyways I think 25mm was a Z51 size in 84 only.

I measured with digital calipers in about 10 different places. It's not a Z51 car, but there's no guarantee I have the original sway bar. I'm guessing the 24mm bushings would be a better choice than the 26mm right? I have not seen a 25mm front bushing in my searching around.

It's probably a 24mm then. I would just buy those, they'll fit.

Measure it where the stock bushings go. The swaybar is smoothed out and a little smaller here.

It was 24.7 where the bushings wore the coating off, 24.9 most other places.

Its either a 24mm or a 25mm

Look at your RPO codes for Z51 or you could try to run the steering wheel lock to lock. 2.0 turns is a Z51.

This assumes that a previous owner hasn't changed the bars.

Coincidentally I have the rack sitting on the floor of my garage right now. It's a 242k mile 5+ owner car so nothing would really surprise me at this point.

That's even easier. Use a crescent wrench to turn the rack lock to lock.

2 turns (z51) or 2-1/3 turns. Or just tell me what 2 letter code is on the dust cap.

I'll check when I get home tonight. Good thing I already bought a 2.5 turn rack because I believed the PO when he said it wasn't a Z51.

Take it back, they won't know any different. I bought a rack that had all the z51 part numbers and it still was the wrong rack.

I ordered mine so I'd probably have to take the shipping hit to send the 2.5 rack back and have the 2.0 rack sent.

It's a Z51, the rack I took out is definitely 2 turns lock to lock. Do you guys think it's worth the hassle of getting the quick ratio rack or will I even notice the difference?

You will notice the difference and regret it if you do any sort of performance driving.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to send that base suspension rack back tonight. I still need to order a p/s pump anyway so I'll just order them both at the same time.
