This a question from both me and my dad. What exactly does the AIR pump do? Yes, something to do with emissions but what exactly? We're considering disconnecting it on my '93 because the sound of the thing is driving us crazy. (Especially since the bumper and hood are off.) Maybe we've overlooked something so we thought we'd ask the forum first. Thanks everyone!
It takes air and inserts it into the exhaust system, do you have emissions, might not be able to pass w/o it, on mine it is pretty quiet maybe a bearing is going out or something like that, just replace it could be easier than the trouble w/o it.

It heats the cats up quicker for emissions. I have a spare pump I bought as a spare a few years ago. If you need one, drop me a PM.
It is there to inject air into the exhaust to complete combustion and so to reduce emissions. Once the engine and cats are hot, its not really a big help.
With it disconnected, there are no problems for the engine. It'll still pass emissions sniffer testing as long as the engine is warmed up.

He lives in California. You have to pass a visual test first. If the smog pump is disconnected it will not pass. You can gut it out. I just did that but my noise was coming from the bearing. I have to have the bearing replaced or buy a remanufactured one from Corvette Central. They want $103.00 plus shipping for the pump. I think the bearing is the cheap way out but I'm still wondering about a sniffer test. A remanufactured smog pump may be the best solution.
