I was comming home the other day when my motor started running real rough, sounded like it was missing it was also back firing at red lights. After I got er' home I was pulling it up onto the concrete ( a slight hump) There was a pretty loud clunk (I'm assuming from the trans cause its a manual) and it died because the clutch is pretty weak...now it wont start back at all it just cranks (sounds like it wants to start tho).
I've searched on here for previous threads but all those were modified engines, mine is completly stock. I was hoping you guys could help me out, I've got plugs an' wires on the way, but I'm sure the problem might go a little deeper than that...
Thanks any help is appreciated, I'd really like to get it back on the road soon!
This sounds for all the world like cross-firing in the ignition system. If the humidity was low when this began, there's a very good chance the cross-firing is occurring in the distributor cap (read: Opti).
the little lights above the climate control. like ASR active, Service engine soon, ect. this is either a problem with too much fuel or too little spark.
statisticly the OPTI has probably failed the only other option I could see is a failed open fuel injector OPTI replacment is expensive and time consuming if it is the OPTI and you cant do the work yourself you are looking a 1k plus inrepair bill (the OPTI alone is close to $400)

Coil, my 92 did close to the same thing comming home from work (died on the road). Thought it was an opti, spoke to some friends of mine and they suggested replacing the coil first. I replaced the coil and it started right up. Ran fine until the waterpump went.

I would also check the ignition control module which is the module bolted to the coil bracket.
Yup. Check the coil and ignition control module (ICM) too. When my coil went ****-up, it took the ICM with it, resulting in a crank-no start condition like you're describing.
ok read some things in my manual so I know a little bit more about what I'm talking about haha...
So yeah no check engine light on so that means no codes correct? I'm thinking thats what I read. But I'm getting ready to check the coil right now, hope thats whats wrong and not the opti! Thanks guys
well just put in a new coil and still wont start. It came really close tho, alot better than it was its actually hitting now just wont stay running. I smelled fuel so that means the pump is working. Any other suggestions? I'm going to bed....4:00 is going to come awful early...

Check your ignition control module (ICM) too. Remove it and take it to AutoZone or NAPA for testing. Mine did the same thing, crank-no start. Replaced coil and ICM and it fired right up!
