Default Interior Lights

Now that I finally got my transmission to shift PERFECT (or as perfect as an auto can be), its time to get on to the next project. Ever since I got the car, the interior lights have been um... not working. The under dash, and door dome light on the drivers side work only when you turn the light switch counter-clockwise. They do not work when you open the door. The passenger side dome light and under dash light do not work at all, and the two cargo lights do not work. I thought they were all supposed to light up when you open the doors.
Also, when you turn the switch counter-clockwise, the spare tire light lights up. Ok, so I noticed that the switch for the passenger side dome light on the door has no little switch in it when i took it apart (just the wires are loose in there -not touching each other-). So my first question is is that why the under dash light does not work, becasue they are on the same circut or something?
Oh, and one more detail. The hatch release works, but it only works from the switch in the console. If you use the switches on the door, they do nothing. So I looked into it some in teh owners manual, and I think it looks like it could be the "dome light delay timer". Has anybody experienced this kind of problem before?....is that the problem? if it is, how do i get to it so i can change it?
Thanks, and also, sorry for the long post.
