Default Door Panel Help

I need help from those that have the Trick for re-installing the door panel. The sliding lock is giving me a hard time. I have taken apart the arm rest and the Black assembly that holds the light.

What is the correct procedure for getting it all back together.

Door panel first and then hook all the wires back together and slide that black part back in??

How did you guys do yours.

Thanks in advance

I just did mine for the first time last week and ran into the same problem. There is a rod that sticks down where the slide mechanism goes. Push that up out of the way and the door lock will slide right in.

On my 86 I hooked up all the plugs and make sure that they worked 1st ( dont ask how I know this) and then with the door panel assembled hang it on the top of the door and loop a piece of wire around the lock lever and pull out slightly through the opening and slide the panel around a little and it should go into the track then set the panel and put in your screws.

I am reinstalling the door panels right now on my 89 and the following is what I use to reassemble. Put the panel on. With the light assy in one hand and located in approximately the correct area of the door panel, take the other hand and grasp the lock rod. Gently pull the lock rod toward you and slide the light assy into the lock rod. You have to pull the rod forward for the light assy to clear the door lock during the sliding process. Once the two go together, place the light assy in the door panel. Gently try this and you will get the feel for it. I echo the comments of HappyDad as I now have to remove the passenger side panel to clean up a "little error" made by the writer of this note

You can install the plastic bezel piece into the panel first then plug it all in, or plug it all in then fish it throught the backside of the panel.

When you get the panel mostly in place, the lock rod needs to slip over the top of the slot in the plastic bezel, then you can push it down into the bezel and screw everything down. Make sure the lockrod is pushed back (locked) when you do this.

I assume you removed the plastic handle from the lock rod?

The orange/red lock handle is off. getting it on track on top off the lock rod.....with bezel plugged in and in place is my current challenge

I don't know why this car intimidates me. Normally, I'd just force it until something breaks.....fix that something and then resume the original course.

This Vette is very nice, I guess that is the difference.

Thanks for you're replies

The piece you describe, the plastic orange manual locking cover just snaps onto the rod...it is just a cover for moving the rod back and forth...
There is some better help in the tech section.... You will get used to this minor repair stuff...
The forum has helped me a lot of times...

This job turned out way easy. Once I noticed the slot on top for the lock rod it all came clear

.....but that is why asking first may be the difference in breaking something or not.

Thanks again guys
