Have a 95 Lt-1 automatic and for the past month or so when it gets down into the 30s or 40s when i go to start it in the morning the first try results in nothing. It doesn't make a sound or an attempt to turn over. But after the first try it would always start like normal. Now today when i try it, i hear the starter trying t engage but then it stops after about one second. I had to do this 5 or 6 times before it actually started. also don't know if it is related when i start it the volt meter is reading 15.0 volts. Had the battery tested it was ok. So is it the altenator, starter, or neutral safety switch?
Burned starter contacts. The starter solenoid at the end of its stroke makes connection between two large copper contacts that switch current to the starter motor. These contacts get burned and cratered and with some life on them, it requires hitting the starter solenoid a number of times to get a good enough contact to operate the starter motor. If you don't even hear a click out of the solenoid, then I would suggest that you remove the battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs , bolts, and the battery terminals and reconnect (neg last). Could also be a VATS problem.
