I started my car today, and started making a real squealing high pitched noise, when I give in gas, it stops then comes back at idle, but I looked under the hood, and the noise is coming from the altenator, and AC compressor area, i took it to a shop where I got my exhaust done at, and he said he thinks its the altenator, he said pull the belt off and spin the altenator to check the bearings, i know this will sound stupid, but how do i take the belt off on a vette? i took many off on other vehicles but never a vette, and what else could it be?
You relieve the tension on the belt by pushing down on the idler pulley. If you don't have the tool that does it then use a prybar. Looking from the passengers side, place the prybar behind the pulley and push towards the drivers side. The belt will come off very easily.
It could also be your air pump making the noise..........
Almost anything. It's a little hard to tell from here. Use a piece of wood, a screwdriver, or a length of hose as a stethoscope to find the source of the noise.

Although you didn't state so, you have an LT1, right? The tensioner can be moved with a (I believe) 5/8" wrench. Either that or it's a 15mm. Check the pulley on it and the idler pulley too. They have about the same life expectancy as the belt and for the $10 to $20 each that they cost, should be replaced when the belt is. The pulley on the tensioner can be changed w/o replacing the whole tensioner and is the same part number as the idler pulley. You'll likely find that the bearings are getting rough in them and the ODs of the pulleys themselves wearing because they are plastic. Hopefully this is the extent of your problem. But if not, be sure and check them too. Once you get the belt off you can easily check every component of the system and make the needed repairs.
usually when you hear a high pitch like that from the alternator thats usually the problem, happened to 2 of my cars.Or if you see pieces of scrap on the alter.

This has nothing to do with your problem but instead with the question you PMed me regarding where my blackout lenses came from. I tried to PM you back the info but your mailbox is full. Also unable to email you the info because you've declined to accept emails from Forum nmembers. At any rate the Black-Out Light Kit came from Ecklers. Link below:

Can't say that I've worked on the tensioner on your exact year, but my experience with my 85 and most other GM's is that you should find a square in the tensioner casting where you just insert the drive end of a 1/2" Johnson bar and lever it?

Nah wrong engine, thats for an L83/L98. For LT1s its on the driver side of the engine under the power steering pulley, a 5/8th or 16mm ring spanner will fit, then pull towards the driver side to relieve tension on the belt, now you can slip the belt off.
There should be a diagram on the driver side of the radiator shroud
