I've read some posts about how dirty connections can cause the digi dash to act up. I was going to take mine out to check it, but stopped because I couldn't get the first trim piece past the steering column. I'm such a chicken s*@t when it comes to forcing plastic pieces. I was afraid it would break or I would scratch the clear plastic on the display.
Am I missing something or do you just have to force it out? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
I don't know about the 91, but I rebuilt my cluter on an 85 and had to unscrew the tilt lever. I used wide-strip masking tape on the flat surfaces to protect from scratches. Good luck.
do you mean the big IP trim that forms the entire top of the dash?
if so, my 92's (which is pretty much the same) came out by taking the edge towards the back of the car, tilt it up about 3-4 inches, and yank out heartily. there are i think 4 tabbies on the front side that slip into mating slots near the front edge of the windshield.
i had problems initially too, and i even had 2 false starts cuz i didn't remove all the screws. sorry to point out the obvious, but check both the front and the sides of the trim for screws. since the screws are black they are sometimes hard to see, especially outdoors at night (which is when i did mine).
hope this helps. after you get the upper IP trim pad off, i don't quite remember if you needed to yank anything else to get the cluster out, but the i remember it was pretty exposed at that point.
again, not to point out the obvious, to get the upper IP pad out, you gotta take out all the a/c vents, the glove box, the console trim (where the a/c controls and the radio are), and the defroster grill. to get the console trim out you have to unscrew (but not remove) the trim plate where your shifter is, and the center a/c vent.
good luck! it was pretty neat for me to see the inside of my 92's IP for the first time...
[edit] oh, you also gotta take out the right trim that holds the fuse cover.
You must drop the steering wheel to get the cover panel out. there are two bolt that you take out under the kick panel and when they are out the steering wheel will fall the the seat and you can retreive the digital cluster and cover.
