Default Lt1 And Lt4, Whats The Difference

The Kids vette 79, is in the paint shop waiting for some fender braces before it comes out of the shop. While visiting there a garage owner came in and said he had wrecked 96 Pontiac with an LT4 and auto. He went on to say the engine had 70.000 miles and was perfect, He would take $500.00 for the motor, trans, computers and would give a warranty for 1000 miles. My question is my 95 vette has the LT! so what is the difference in an LT4 The Kids motor is an L48 185 horsepower. Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of an LT4 in a '96 Pontiac. And by Pontiac I assume you mean T/A? They were only offered in '97 in those and then only in a scant few. And I mean very few. And none were available with an automatic. No matter though, either LT1 or LT4 it is not a drop-in into a '79. For starters you would have to computerize the '79.

GS 345

THANKS, The place you sent me to answered all my questions, that was a killer site. I will find out how much trouble it will be to make it fit the Kids vette and if it's too much I think I will buy it just to have a spare for my vette. Thanks GS345 and all the others who responded, this is a great bunch of guys and a great forum.

wow. I am with Corvette Kid. There were a few - like 50 or so - 1997 T/As and another 50 or so Z28 SS's made with LT4s. They are about as rare as **** on a boar.

My guess, it's an LT1.

Now, fitting the LT1 in the 79 is not the problem... modifying the transmission to fit is not that big an issue, it's been done many times. 700R4 based A4s are easily installed into C2's and C3's.

The LT1 will bolt right up, it's still a small block. Just use the old style motor mounts.

The electronics are not that bad... about 25 wires to make sense out of.

The real upside? If you are the least bit concerned about meeting emissions standards, you are legally able to use the Corvette exhaust system from 1996. This means dual cats and dual exhaust.

This upgrade would = about 100 hp over the 1979 motor... and 30mpg highway. Seriously.

Someone may have installed a LT4 in the TA. Remove the oil cap in the passenger side valve cover. With a flashlight look down next to the rocker arm(LT4 has needle bearing rocker arms) and you will see LT4 letters cast in the heads. Also look for ovate (oval) valve springs another LT4 only from GM. The Red LT4 intake only fits the LT4 heads and this is one easy way to tell if this is a real LT4. If you see the LT4 letters cast in the heads, Buy it.

There were 22, yes 22, LT4 Trans Ams in 1997. There were 100 SS Camaros. They were all 6 spds. I'm pretty sure it's not an original LT4. May have LT4 hotcam kit, or possibly LT4 heads/intake, but I doubt it.

$500 for a complete LT1 setup is still a good deal.

so that's the count? Cool. I was always under the impression it was 50 of each.

Whatever the case, I am pretty sure they were all specials - SS's and Firehawks, meaning they were all built by SLP. Is this right?

A part of me would LOVE to have a 1992 Firehawk. Serious power and a ZF6. They are seriously rare and quite pricy these days.
