Default 91 fuel problem, .....again

changed a fuel pump a month ago. car had been sitting for years and fuel pump deteriorated.

anyway. did tune up and car ran great.

now the fuel pump will not engage. it will sometimes but not alway. when it does it will run for a few minutes and put out lots of pressure. then it loses pressure.

Before I change the pump again.

Is the fuel pump what gives the fuel system pressure?
I don't think it is the pressure regulator.

Is there something that could be causing the fuel pump to be intermittent that I should check before I change it again.

on the plus side after changing the pump the first time I aint scared of it, but i don't want to change it if that isn't the problem.

thanks for the help.
if you look at my other post today (91 wont start) you will see I was helped to get to this far.

Didn't want anyone to think i was smart and figured this out myself.

Re fuel pump:

I believe the stock GM fuel pump is a vane-type positive-displacement pump.

As such the pump FLOW is proportional to the voltage at the pump motor.

On a 16-year old vehicle, ALL the wiring connections are subject to inspection for
corrosion and insulation/contact damage. A new pump won't work unless it's
connected to a source of electricity. That should give yor a place to start, anyway.

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator has a problem...
