My 86 quit while driving after I hit a small bump. I asked and you people had some really helpful info. I did like you said. I turned on the key and the SES light does not come on. It points to the ECM. Well I have done as the book said. And I can't find it. I have removed the right side plastic under the dash. I have removed the front of the dash(pad), I can see the VATS box. But where is the ECM. Thanks guys!
The ECM is behind the dash pad, but you cannot remove it that way. If the hush panel above the footwell is removed, you will have to put your head in the footwell and look straight up. There are two large bolts holding the ECM in place, I want to say they are 10-11mm, and you will need a couple extensions.
The ECM slides down, gently tug on the harness to pull it down.

, I found that if you sit in the seat upside down, with your legs out of the roof, it is easier then trying to bend over the side of the car... but it still isnt easy.
