ok I just bought my exhaust and still have some money to spend. What should I be getting next? Not looking for anything too expensive or that will need to be in the shop for awhile as this is my only car.
try a k&n air filter to compliment the airflow with that new exaust. then get you an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to up the flow a little bit since you will be moving more air.
The most noticable improvement that I made to my 86 so far was replacing the rear carrier and camber arm bushings with Energy Suspension polyurthane bushings. The difference was like night and day. A super stable feel with no wondering or jumping around over bumps like before. My original bushings did'nt look too bad either. Great bang for the buck providing your tie rod ends and bearings are already in good shape. This and swapping out my 2.59 gears for 3.07s were the best improvements.
I did this:
1. Corsa exhaust and K & N filter with air foil.
2. Chip, Plugs and wires, 52mm throttle body, Hooker headers and 160 t-stat
3. 373 gears from 259
The gears were the most noticable $900 including new bearings.
Next is torque converter - 2800 Vigilante
Then heads and cam with intake manifold. Looking for 385 RWHP :seeya
Not sure how much extra money you speak of. Everything I have read says gears, gears, gears. I haven't done it yet as I have 3.45's and just starting from bone stock I am still fixing and upgrading the needed maintance items, clutch, maintenance, electric waterpump, interior trim ect...
I jumped on the SLP claw group purchase and its installed. Sounds better now and I feel a little seat of the pants improvement. I just ordered a Corsa cat back system that will be installed with the new clutch. If I didn't live in a quiet neighborhood, I would have went with Power Effects.
But gears, rims, big brakes, headers, hot cam kit, ported heads, mp3 sound, and new seat covers are on the short list. Not sure how much I will actually do or in what priority. But it will probably be close in order listed.
You didn't say if you have an auto or 6spd, or what rear end gear you currently have.
Skip the throttle body & shorty headers, don't need either. If you want headers get the long tubes otherwise your car should go deep into the 12's easily with the stock exhaust manifolds.
-160° thermostat and chip programmed to turn the fans on earlier
-change the plugs & wires
-Skip the breathless box get an open lid & K&N instead for less than 1/2 the price
-Gears
-PI Vigilante if you have an auto
-Drag Radials
if you already have a 3.07 gear or higher then you could skip the gear & just get the converter.
This should work into your plan considering the first things I listed are the cheapest & you can easily do them yourself. Then you can save for the bigger ticket items like the gear & converter.
just my .02
The gears in that car are 3.54. They are the stock gears put in that car and it is very rare to have them in a '92 and up. I would not change them, but that is my opinion. Your car (now ;).
