Default Oil Temp?

Was out driving in my 86 yesterday and never noticed before but...my oil temp was climbing slowly. It eventually got hotter than my coolant temp. which was hovering around 192..When I parked the car in my garage the oil temp was right at 220. What would be considered normal for oil temp under normal driving conditions. When would it be considered to hot and bad to operate the car? When would I need to worry about it? Thanks in advance...

Normal operating temps would have oil 20*F hotter than the coolant.
Sounds like you are right on.

220 F isn't a problem and nothing to be concerned about. I prefer my oil temps to be right where you posted.

The NASCAR boys race with oil temps close to or even, in some cases, higher than 300F

Synthetics can handle much higher temps than regular motor oil before showing any sign of breaking down. With NON-synthetic oil, I'd become alarmed at temps 260 or higher.

Those temps are perfectly normal, and the oil temperature will eventually pass the coolant temp.

With dino oil, 250+ is a breakdown point. With synthetics 300+. But its the coolant temp going over 250 that should cause worry, if it gets there shut the car off.
