I have an 85 project car. It runs good but there is a thumping noise/vibration under load, like when I'm going uphill in high gear. Downshift or decelerate and it goes away. The yoke coming out of tranny has a lot of side to side play (1/8") so I believe this is the problem. Its not leaking. If this is the problem, what do I replace? If 1/8" play is mormal, how do you check the tranny mount?
Replace the bushing in the tailhousing of the trans. Wth the tailhousing removed, it is only 5 minutes and 10 bucks to do. Teflon bushings are nice. I use them in most builds.
While the tailhousing is off, grab the output shaft and wiggle it up and down. If it moves more than 1/4 inch, the bushing in the case is also worn.
Hopefully the case bushing is good. Total disassembly of the trans is needed to correct this.

Thanx, Pete....I've heard this is a common problem on the C-4's...is that correct?? mine just showed up out of nowhere.....sound like the whole drivetrain is gonna come apart, by the noise....
Thanks guys! Could you be more specific for stupid me? What exactly is the tailhousing part of the tranny and how is it removed. I assume the exhaust has to be dropped first? Will the output shaft be obvious with the tail housing removed. Sorry, Haynes manual covers none of this. Thanks again!
One other thing...Mine does't seem nearly as bad as it did last week. Will this condition hurt the tranny if not attended to right away and driven gently? If I have to drop the exhast, I"ll probably replace it too.

I'm not enough of an expert to say...I'll leave that to Pete, as he really knows his stuff. As for me, mine has gotten worse, so I'm not driving mine until I get it fixed. The tailhouse is the rear of the tranny, and should be bolted to the tranny body. By Pete's description, doesn't seem like anything should fall out(other than maybe fluid), so should be a relative easy fix. I'm assuming that the exhaust will have to be dropped, the driveshaft and brace will have to be removed, to get at the tailhousing. Pete would be able to tell you better than I.
Anybody else had this problem and fixed it with a bushing? Thanks as it seems like a big job, especially if I replace the exhaust which it needs too. It's supposed to be pretty common so i expect some feedback.
It is common on any rear wheel drive, higher milage gm product. It is actually less common on the vette's. The rear does not move up and down like any other car would. I replace(at a minimum) the pump, case and tailhouse bushing on every build.
How big of a job it is is relative to your ability or wallet. I would expect a pro would be able to replace a tailhouse bushing and yoke(if need be) in 2 hrs.

Mike,
When you have yours apart,(tailhousing removed) wiggle the output shaft up and down to check the wear in the case bushing. If heavily worn, you may have to bite the bullet and change it. In my own car, it wore, spun and ruined the case. Hate to see it happen to someone else.

I found this in another forum. Hate to add more options to this thread, but does this make sense??
"My 'creaking' and/or clicking comes from the tranny tunnel backbone brace (or whatever you call it) that rubs on the mount of the tranny and the rear end. I thought, too, that it may be wheel bearings, u-joints or spring binding but I replaced them and still have the creaking. GM slathers on a coating that helps the situation but after replacing the clutch pivot ball, which requires removing the backbone, the problem subsided for a while and then came back just as before."
