If the mast seems to operating okay then replacement should be simple. I bought a replacement mast for my 95 from ebay for about $10 and it comes with a socket to remove the nut that keeps the mast in place. Remove the nut and then the mast with the ribbon cable. Reinstall the new mast (thread in the ribbon cable). This works easiest with 2 people--one person to feed the cable and the other to turn the radio on/off as it takes a couple of times to get it just right. All-in-all about a 10 minute fix.
