The digital portion of my guage cluster will go on the fritz whenever my car hits a bump. I can tap on the front of it and it starts working again but here lately it has gotten worse. I havent seen any rebuild sources for the later model clusters. I assume it is becouse not many people have problems with them. Any one else experience this?
I had the same exact issue with my 91. It took a long time to sort out but here is what I did the results and the end result.
First I pulled the dash cluster out. I pulled it apart and reseated and cleaned the connections. That seemed to make it better for a week or so. then it started to give me the same issue. Push on cluster hit the dash and it would start working again.
So I bought a 93 or so cluster on ebay. It read complete garble when it was installed. I pulled the old lcd display card from the 91 and inserted it into the 93 cluster. All works well now. I believe based on my experience that to make a later cluster work you have to put in an earlier lcd for it to read correctly. A search of the forums here showed mentions to a document on how to make a new cluster work with a 90/91 but, I could never find the document.
I suggest you look for a 91 or 90 cluster on ebay and go that route or worst case a newer cluster and move your lcd over and hope the lcd panel is not your original problem.
I took it apart and cleaned the connections. I also used a little dielectric grease on the main connection. It works like a champ now. I suspect the main connection was the problem. Thanks for everyone's input.
