I had my '88 die on me the other day in the parking lot of a restuarant, and I have checked the fuse, relay, rear pump connection and the pump itself with all working. I am pretty sure the problem is with the ground wire coming out of the tank. It comes out of a yellowish colored square piece of plastic and goes through the top bracket and into the connection to the wiring harness. The ground wire is burned looking but I can't figure out first how to get that piece out and second, where I can get a new one. Any ideas here?
First I would try a tie wrap around the conector to see if that will keep the connector together.
The tool you are looking for to remove the wire and replace the end you can purchase at napa.
It looks like a small screw driver with a small round end that is hollow in the end.
You push the tool into the wire that you want to remove after you take the connector apart. You have to make sure you flip up the back half of the connector so the wire can release,or you can break it.
I hope this helps, I suck at explaining things,I just know how to fix things.
I narrowed the problem down to my wiring harness. A wire between the resistor and the outside connector is burned. It is too small to patch and the resistor is solid so I can't get the wires out of it. I need to get a new harness.
Does anyone know where I can get a new wiring harness for an '88 fuel pump? I have asked the local dealership with no success (going to try another one since the one I asked didn't sound very competent) and I have looked in several of the normal parts places (ecklers, MAD, Corvette America, etc). Any other ideas. Getting kind of desperate here.
The just issued Ecklers C-4 catelog has the complete fuel filler/pump/fuel gauge and wiring harness assembly listed. Let me know if you don't have this catelog and I'll send you the part # so you can check it out online.
I found out that I can get a new wiring harness from Carter for my fuel pump, however, it doesn't have the large resistor that the original one does.
How important is the resistor? I assume that since Carter sells the wiring harness without the resistor, that it is not horribly important. How off am I?
