Default L98 Underdrive Pulley question.

I've been reading a lot of threads about underdrive pulley's and can't decide if I should buy the two piece or three piece pulley set.

I want to buy an "Aluminum" pulley set and have looked into "March", "Auto Specialties" and so, far Jegs has a BBK Aluminum 3 piece set for $139 which seems like a good deal.

Also, I know I would probably have to buy a shorter belt so, would the parts store be able to just pick a belt from the length I give instead of a part number? Thanks

I bought the underdrive crank pulley only, so the chances of having any charging or cooling issues was all but eliminated. It still slows the accessories down, but not to an extreme. Just that pulley is $60 or so at Mid America Motorworks.

As for the belt, not sure how it is out West, but every parts store counterman on this coast is clueless if the part is not listed on their computer screen...

A little tip:

A GATES belt will be K060 followed by the 3 digit belt length...In other words, a 56.5" long belt would be K060565, and a 56" long belt would be K060560, a 103.7" belt would be K061037 etc...
K = serpentine belt
06 = 6 ribs
xxxx = last four digits are length, with last digit being length shorter than a full inch.

A DAYCO belt reads the same way, but the first digits are 5060...

A few years ago I had a few supercharged cars so I had to know exactly what numbers meant what in order to get belts that fit...

Hope this helps.

I'll let someone with an L98 help you with the 2pc vs. 3pc. issue...but I can tell you that most (ALL that I know of) manufacturers encode the # of ribs and belt length into the SKU#, so if you know what the length should be, they can hook you up.

Be prepared for a couple of trips to the store, though.

What I did was routed the stock belt as if to re-use it, and squeezed (or pinched) the belt together at any part that's easy to get to. Mark the old belt with a Sharpie on both sides that you have pinched together at the spot where it would be together if it was indeed the right length, then measure the distance between the marks...Mine was 2.5" shorter than stock, and using the tip I gave above I got one belt, installed it, and all was good.

Hopefully, the measuring was explained clear enough to help and not confuse, lol...

Thanks, for the great belt info! I'm going to print this out and put it in my glove box.

I went with a Aluminum 3 piece (March I Think) never had any problems w/ charging or anything else. Two trips to Auto Zone was all it took for the right belt size!

Hey Homie, I'm from Citrus Heights. I got the March pullys. I think it's called the Amp series. I got 3 pullys. I never had any problems with the alternator charging the battery. I think you get about another 10 or 15 HP. The march kit gives you a guide that shows you what belt to use.

Nice Engine Pic Kool88vette!

I'm probably going to go with the BBK 3 piece Aluminum Pulley set for $139 since the March Amp 3 piece pulley set is more expensive. I'll check out March's website for the belt guide.

Thanks for all the info!

I bought the March 3 piece kit years ago (close to 10), came w/ a belt. I saved a few bucks & went w/ the black, thought it was steel but never paid much attention.

Then when I rebuilt my short block 2 years ago noticed the paint coming off the crank pully. Used some paint stripper & guess what was underneath... yup, the polished alum. pulleys.

The steel set comes with a alum crank pulley.

I see that Summit has the ASP and JET pullies for my 95. Why are the Jet pulleys so expensive? How are the ASP pullies? Anyone using them? I looked at the BBK's on Jeggs but I believe they are probably for F-bodys. You may want to call and verify that the ones you are looking at will fit your car.

Good catch on the Jeg's BBK pulley set. I wonder if there's any difference between the F-body L98 pulleys and the L98 Corvette pulleys?
