When my battery died completely the voltage guage jumped around like crazy at idle. When I hit the brakes the display went away completely and then came back. If you have a bad alternator you can ruin your battery if it gets completely discharged. If you just have a bad battery as I did you should be alright to replace it. You might want to investigate a little about why the battery went dead but it could just be age.
Autozone and places like that can test your battery and alternator free of charge.
Well it might not be either the alternator or the battery, I would just check those first. Easy enough to check without having to dig too deep. Also probably the easiest to change. I bought an Optima battery when I replaced mine about a month or so ago, I shouldn't have any trouble out of it for a long time.
Re: Display flickers when I hit brake. (Nathan Plemons)
Change the front spindle. I had the same problem in my steel blue.
Top flight Corvette in San Diego sloved the problem by changing the front spindle. I still don't know exactly what was causing the problem but I have a pretty good idea. The ABS sensor is hooked up through the front spindle, so when the spindle is bad it would trigger the ABS and cause a short through the ECU. that is why the lights and dash flickers.
Does your ABS active light come on often too???
I am 95% sure you are experiencing the same problem as I did.
