Base timing for my '86 is 6 degrees before top dead center. You should have a sticker someplace in the engine compartment that tells what it should be for your car. You know about disconnecting the electronic spark timing wire before setting base timing? It is a little weather pack connector on a single wire near the right side of the wiper motor. It comes out of a large bunch of wires there. After you set the timing you need to shut off the car, re-connnect the wire, and clear the codes from the computer.
