Does anyone make some type of ignition upgrade kit that allows you to throw the opti away? If not presently will it happen or is the lt1 design such that there is no way to make a real improvement to an otherwise great engine.
Re: I drowned the opti-cra.. module again (Rich Shriver)
I haven't seen anything in their catalog (but then I have an L98), but you might try Street and Performance (www.hotrodlane.cc/), telephone (501)394-5711. They seem to have a lot of stock and aftermarket performance products for a range of motors including LT1 and LT4's and it looks as if they experiment around a bit.
Re: I drowned the opti-cra.. module again (Rich Shriver)
Electromotive has a crank trigger set up with individual coils for spark. I got one of their very first ones, and the wheel wasn't quite right so the timing was off. But the motor soon let go anyway, and when I replaced it, I went back with an optispark. They probably have a better wheel now and that system is probably pretty good. Only downside is that the coil packs mount on top of the drivers side valve cover and you have to custom make your own wires (unless they sell them with the kit now).
Are you washing your engine or something? How are you getting it wet? That was the only way mine ever got wet, so I stopped cleaning it. Somebody sells an upgrade kit to allow engine vaccum to dry it out I believe.
Re: I drowned the opti-cra.. module again (White Lightning 89)
Yea.....I knowingly (Is that a word) washed the front of the engine. I thought I might get away with it since my Opti is only a year old. It did dry out after a day sitting in my drive instead of the garage (hope no damage was done). Anyway I will not do ti again. I promise.........Thanks for the info.
Re: I drowned the opti-cra.. module again (Vette92)
Do you know why they quit making it? I hadn't heard that... thats interesting. I wonder if they just didn't have enough customers on the deal or something like that. They're still in business right?
Re: I drowned the opti-cra.. module again (White Lightning 89)
In past years, several individuals posted first hand info about the Electromotive optical units chronically failing every few months. The unit was pulled from the market and they extended warranties for folks that wanted to continue using them. The unit looks like a prototype drag setup, hardly street worthy.
If you installed a new Optispark without squirting $2 worth of black permatex on the seams and installing the GM $15 vacuum purge harness kit, sorry to hear. Once you get water in it and experience high voltage misfire, carbon tracking occurs. Waiting for it to dry out is a band-aid. It will never be the same until the cap is removed and and the carbon dust residue cleaned out. Carbon powder is a conductor and on top of that, it serves as a dessicant and attracts/holds moisture. It's the "smoky film" you see on old used caps and rotors.
