Hey guys, newbie here, although I've read the posts and been a owner of 2 vettes for 10 years. It's time to do the optispark & waterpump on my 92', It only has 28K miles, but has been a garage queen for most of its life. My question is which optispark should I purchase? The OEM type for that year, or a later year & modify it for to add the vacumn to?
Any recomendations on where to purchase? Eckler's ? GM Parts Direct, etc?
It has been a great runner, but has developed a high rpm miss, so I'm starting with what I think is the weakest link.I'm also doing the water pump at the same time, and fuel filter. It has Platium Plugs & new wires.
Should I also get the coil? Any other suggestions?
Thanxs for any help you can give me. Save the Wave ~~~~
In order to upgrade to the newer style opti, you would have to change the timing cover and chain also. Don't know how involved you want to get with this. MSD makes one which is vented like the later style ones. Probably more money than a factory one though. Some people take apart their early opti's and seal them to keep out moisture.
I highly recommend that you do NOT install a replacement OEM Gen-1 Opti on your car. It'll be just as deficient as the one you're taking off, because there were no improvements made.
Converting it to a Gen-2 unit is not worth the expense and hassle, in my opinion. Requires new camshaft, timing cover, etc.
Consider the DynaSpark or MSD aftermarket units as better options. The Dyna is a great product, with a solid track record in the field. I installed one on my '94 back in 2004, and it's been great. The MSD is relatively new to the market, thus there isn't a lot of field history on it yet. Both the MSD and Dyna are bolt-on replacements for the OEM Opti.
here's the writeup but I agree with SJW. I purchased, installed and ran a new oem opti and it was defective right out of the box. Bought a MSD and all is well
Hey Guys, thanx for your imput...I think Iwill go Dynaspark or MSD for sure now. I agree about about adding a later year model w/ all the mods needed .
IMHO, upgrading to a 95-96 opti is not a bad choice. You will have to install a new timing-chain cover (95) and harness, but they are so much better built and much cheaper to replace. As long as you keep them dry, the opti-spark is much more reliable then most people think.

Well guys, let me tell ya...this job was no walk in the park..I had a injury at work which has also slowed me down. Here's where I'm at...removed all part down to crankcase hub, all done without removing anything I though I could work around..i.e. left the steering dampner on, tranny cooler, etc. I got the crankcase dampner off, but am kinda stuck on the hub. I'm afraid of damaging the threads in the crank, and have tryed several times by adding a washer, etc. into the space. Once I get my puller in, you can't see whats going on, off-center, etc. I think if i drill a starter hole in the crankbolt, it may do the trick. I did get a MSD timing opti, new waterpump, temp. sensor, gaskets ,etc. I got a new timing cover as well, with all new seals, etc. It's just down to removing the hub that's holding me up. Any suggestions?
Summers closing in on me, and I need to finish this work. Thanxs in advance, have a great day...Save the Wave ~~~~
