Took the car for a spin on Sunday, running really well.
Filled up with gas and about 10 mins later the car began to misfire, almost like fuel starvation, if you backed of the gas gently the engine would pick up. It Finally cut out altogether in the middle of nowhere with me not knowing where the hell I was. Checked fuel at the shreader valve, ok, put a spark tester on a couple of leads, all ok.
Whilst testing the engine fired up so I gently drove it trying to get to habitation, as we went the SES light came up the the engine settled down and allowed me to drive home.
Codes set are 34 and 44 which looks like MAF or O I think and driving the car its well down on power, sounds flat and is very jerky when going on and off the gas.
Help in what steps to take next would be very much appreciated.
Car is early 86 vert with alloy heads. pretty standard apart from custom exhaust (standard Manifold) no Cat, TB bypass and aftermarket chip (Hyper tech, i think).
You don't need a scanner. Your paper clip was the scanner. Just get a hold of a digital multi meter and follow the troubleshooting charts and instructions on the above pages.
When dealing with multiple codes(except ecm and prom related), always start form the lowest number first. The maf problem likely triggered the code 44. 44 may go away once the maf problem is solved.
Gasoline does not absorb water. Alcohol will. Dry gas is alcohol. It absorbs the water then the gas absorbs the alcohol/water mix, allowing you to pass the moisture.

Do you know who makes this ?
I cant find it in the UK but I might be able to find a UK distributor if I know who makes it

Barry,
Here in the states it is easily available everywhere. Any auto parts store should have it. Sometimes they even call it isopropol. The wal mart carries it. I believe the brand name they carry is called Heet.
Hopefully someone local to you can provide some local dealers. Very inexpensive too. 2 or 3 for a dollar.
I have just received an email from the fuel company from whom I got the gas (I had emailed them to complain) and they have admitted liability and offered to cover the repair cost of the car. So the vette will go to a dealers this week to be fixed.
Seems that the fuel was contaminated with silicon.
