Is it absolutely necessary to change out the timing chain cover on this motor to the old one off of my l98? The only interference I see so far is one bolt that hits the back side of the water pump. I looks like if I use a button head bolt it will clear, then no more issues. Will something else in the install interfere with this cover that I am not seeing? Thanks for any responses guys.

Tom,
On mine we used the plastic cover with the integrated gasket. It should come with one of the bolts heads shaved down - I got a new one from Chris May at Superior chevy - on my brothers we tried a chrome one - but it didn't work. The shaved down bolt is their "engineering solution " to the short legged water pump. You could grind down one of the shouldered bolts - but you have to get it pretty thin to fit the water pump - and then it's tough to get a wrench to sit on it if you ever have to change it out (mine developed and oil leak - what a PITA to repair.
I'm using the plastic timing cover with a short water pump. Had to grind the heads of the bolts on the back of the water pump. Been on two years with no problems.
