Default Replacing socket and bulb on 84 dash

My 84 has a bad bulb on the temp guage side. I replaced it using the needle nose plyers method and the bulb works but would flicker when you touched it so I think the socket is also bad. I need some imput how to take the display out to get the back cover off to unscrew the the bulb and socket. My FSM surprisingly showed me nothing as to where the screws are to remove the cluster( Im looking at section 8c 1)Are there any secrets I need to know and should the battery be disconected? Any input is much appreciated.

Disconnect the neg definately before you do anything. After you remove the center dash molding, everthing should be visible to you...

do a search on digital dash. I've seen some articles on getting the dash out and apart.
Supposedly you can use (I think) 165 bulbs that are cheap and not halogen, they work but aren't as bright.

There are 4 screws, set back a little in the corners of the cluster. I think they are 5/16; a quarter drive screwdriver and extenstion head works well to get to them (as well as a flashlight). Be careful not to scratch your lower dash panel when you pull it out; tilting it a little and lowering your wheel helps.

The harness plugs into it from the DIC, I had to pull off the center dash panel and remove the DIC to get the harness plug to unplug from the cluster.
