Default Silly OIL Question....

Hey Guys,

Quick Question.... I'm a Neubie with vettes and I recently scooted over from the Blue Oval crowd. So now I have this beauty 1996 CE Corvette with an LT4 motor and I want to give her a good tune up.

Time has come for an Oil change and nowhere in the OM states how many quarts of oil to use in a routine oil change with and without oil filter. I also want to change the 6-speed tranny oil and I can't find that info as well.

I'm turning to you vette professionals/enhusiasts for some assitance. Here are my questions:

1 -How many quarts of motor oil do I use in a LT4 Motor? With oil filter? Without foilf filter?

2 - How many quarts of oil to use for 6-speed Tranny?

Thank you all in advance for your help...

I can not answer all your questions, but use Mobile 1 synthetic 5W30 and I believe it is 5 qts with the filter change. If you did not get an owner's manual you will want to find one, and the Helms Factory Service manuals if you do your own work. Thinds like how to reset the oil change warning light, how PKE works, etc are important to most of us. Welcome to Corvette ownership! Nothing else like it. I still have my Mustang, but it doesn't even begin to compare to the vette.

thank you for your helpful replies. I just looked in my friends c4 book and found the answers.

I never looked in the bag of goodies that came with the car. Been so busy with work. there are 2 big red books. 1of1 and 2of2. They are like the mother of all Chilton books! I should have looked in the bag before posting...sorry. I also found the Owner's manual with a corvette pen and flashlight. I know the owner must have mentioned it to me in an email but I've been so busy with work and never really payed attention.

I will miss the Cobra. She was a rare one ..........she was putting down 321 to the wheels and kicked some LT1 ***....plus only 117 were ever made in my old combination. ButAminnich said it best "..... it doesn't even begin to compare to the vette."

You will find the answers in these useful links:

http://www.zfdoc.com/techinfo.htm
http://www.grandsportregistry.com/96_specs.htm

(There are other fun things to peruse there, so I won't spoil it for you. )

Edit - just saw that you found the answer, but don't let that stop you from checking out the links. The GSR in particular is a great source for all things LT4.

Those are the factory service manuals. The previous owner saved you $60-$80 by giving them to you, and they are invaluable even if hard to search through at times (try looking for the electrical ground locations ).
