If I understand you correctly, it is a no shift.
Check the following carefully:
1)Governor assembly.
This includes a stripped gear, hung up yalve or worn weight pins.On hi mile cars, the axle pins actually wear quite a bit.
2)The screen that feeds the governor.
Might be blocked or collapsed
3) severely worn seperator plate
(from check *****)
4) Worn scarf cut seals on second apply piston(servo)
(not likely)
5)Servo check ball capsule not sealing. Change this regardless (during the rebuild)

Yes, revved to the moon and felt like it was in neutral. When it revved back down it would slam down into gear and then drive. Like I said it did it probably 3 times in a couple of months. Gotta fix this, it felt like the whole rear end fell to the cement. Gonna learn how to rebuild in a couple of weeks!!!!!

If the trans is low milage, it is typically tv valve problems that contribute to the failure. Often, misadjusted cable.
Governor problems can also contribute to a hurt 3-4.
You will see the frictions will likely be black(burnt) upon disassembly.
Take lots of pics
