Ok, so i have my heads off the car and they are covered in hard (i guess its carbon) stuff! I want to clean all this off before i put it back together! What is the best way to clean them? The valves are the worst part! Thanks!
If you've gone to all of the trouble to pull the heads, have them rebuilt by a good machine shop. I'ts not that expensive - the big cost is the R & R labor, which you've already done.
The shop will disassemble the heads, clean, and check for cracks. They will check the valve stem clearance, resurface the valves and their seats, and reassemble with new valve seals.
Carb cleaner will also melt that gunge... but If you have em off, now is the time for a 3 angle seat, new seals & even new springs are only about $75 & will restore seat pressure. My stock springs when tested at 78K were toast from running 1.6 rockers.
