RACK&PINION QUESTION..
leakage. My question is;does anyone sell kits to reseal these,or do I have to
get off my wallet for a rebuilt unit?(I'd rather spend the 300 bucks on useful
stuff like a poly bushing kit!!!) :flag
I had this problem for 5 years before I changed the rack...Idrained and refilled the reservoir every year with new fluid and it kept it running good.
Finally it started to get real bad.
You can get a rebuilt rack from various places for under 150 dollars or even have your rack rebuilt.
I got mine from autozone for 139 dollars and it has a lifetime warranty, and thus so far its worked fine.
If I wouldve known I could get mine professionaly rebuilt at the time by a shop near me, i would have.
(I found the shop one day when I was going somewhere)Price was around 140,about the same as the pece I got from autozone.
Napa, car quest and etc may carry rebuilt racks far cheaper then GM new units.
Check the yellow pages under rack and axle
service.
As far as a re seal kit, I dont know much about them.Havent seen any in the catalogs or etc yet.You can ask napa or some auto stores if theres a kit.
You need to determine whats exactly wrong with it inside before assuming it needs new seals.
try draining and refilling it a few times to get all the crap out of there and it may help prolong the life a little more.
As a precaution, I still do this every year with my new rack to keep it clean inside.
:)
