Default 87 Dash Cluster Problems Continued

Once again I find myself asking for help. Be glad one day when I can contribute and not be a leech, but most on here have forgotten more than I know.

Had the dash cluster rebuilt but still didn't seem to fix my problem. My problem is when I turn on the headlights or fog lights the dash cluster goes almost black. Is very dim and the longer I keep the headlights on the darker it gets until it goes out completely. The rebuilder felt pretty confident that it was the phote cell and replaced it. I have also replaced the headlight switch assembly still nothing. If I shine a light into the photo cell they come back up to full brightness but within a few minutes they are back to black. I have also noticed that the light dimmer on the light switch has no effect on them it doesn't dim them a bit, they seem to have a mind of their own and dim themselves. Any ideas on what to look at next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a wood dash panel or have you checked how well your plastic bezel fits over the photo cell? It's not completely covering it up is it?

Also, I can't remember, but I think there's a photocell override at a certain point... maybe the circuitry isn't right there?

The plastic bezel is out still I haven't put it back in yet, was testing it before I put it back in. Will have to check in an over-ride, but would love to put it back to stock if at all possible.

Both the dimming variable resistor on the headlight switch shaft and the photoresistor on the dash control the brightness of the back lights on the cluster. I believe that your problem is associated with the variable resistor on the headlight switch. Measure the voltage on either side of the inst fuse with the parking or headlights on and rotate the headlight switch. The voltage should increase with ccw rotation. My 87 is on a lift right now or I would measure the voltage and tell you what mine does.
