Default Can anyone help me about crossfire injection

I heard the crossfire engine is not a good one. Can someone please give me some info on what to do to make it last longer? I was told there was something you can do to keep it running longer.

Default crossfire

The engine is really a standard small block chevy. it's a good engine. The problem usually that affects longevity is a leaking injector that washes the oil off of a cylinder (or cyinders) if it sits too long.
Then after the bare cylinder wall starts being scraped by the rings, it causes exaggerated cylinder wall/piston ring wear.
There's no reason a 84 engine shouldn't last 150,000 miles or more with overdrive.
The reason a lot of people don't like the crossfire is the size of the ports (small) and there's two throttle bodies. A lot of people just don't understand the tuning and the maintenance of that fuel injection system.
The hood of an 84 is only found on the 84 so if you were to change the fuel injection, it would be a major pain to use that hood.

Nothing wrong with a '84. The engine in the '84 was designated "L83" and was used in the Corvette in '82 and '84. It's a twin throttle body injection system. It's "bad rep" came mainly from people who try to repair them without properly understanding them. Over the years they have proven to stand the test of time as many are still in service reliably in daily driven cars. These days with all the info on the internet diagnosing and repairing problems that might arise is easier than ever.

Don't let the Crossfire injection steer you away from a '84. I owned one loved the car.

Why do you NEVER hear about what a pile of crap the 82 Vettes are??????? Hmmmmm.......
It's always these sorry old '84 Vettes that are NO GOOD.

How about not buying one and leave them out there for ME to buy. I've been seriously considering getting myself ANOTHER '84 Vette to go with ............anyway............. They are ALMOST GIVING them away now.

I got one. ABSOLUTELY LOVE it. I've had it for dang near TEN YEARS now.

I rarely even raise the hood on it. It just goes and goes like the 'Battery Bunny'.

BTW, that hood CoupeGuy mentioned is a COLD AIR INTAKE system... built into the hood.
The rest of'em ain't got THAT!!!

It's hasn't got the HP some other Vettes have but.....
It 'FEELS' good and DRIVES great.

I've got a Z06 that has outrageous HP.... and there's NO PLACE on the street I can practically 'let'er rip'.
So all that HP sits in the garage most of the time.

But my '84 gets driven quite regularly. Even when it sits for a few weeks, when I get in it, it cranks right up with the first touch of the key and it runs until I turn it off.

I wash it. I drive it. I change oil on it, I drive it. I vacumm the carpets, I drive it.

The CrossFire fuel injection requires just about Z-E-R-O maintenence.
And sitting directly under it is.....drum roll...... a famous Small Block Chevy engine.

I've found that about 99% of the folks that knock the CrossFire have NEVER owned one.

Another BTW...... My '84 Corvette has 151,000 Miles on that sorry old ORIGINAL CrossFire engine AND transmission.
How in 'de WURLD did it EVER make it THAT far since it's such a 'bad', "BAD', BAAADDD old engine.
They ALL should be THIS bad. Don't you think?

When you find out how to make it last longer, please post. Mine is only 24 years old, with only 165,000 miles on it, with only 800+ quarter mile races on it, with no more than routine maintenance, and I'd hate to have it wear out prematurely. Maybe it's time to start babying it.

RACE ON!!!

I have an 84 with the crossfire. I wouldn't hesitate one second hopping in it and taking it cross country tomorrow.

All the crap you hear about the 84's is 99% from people who never had one, nor ever worked on one.

I Own a 84 with crossfire with X Ram set up.The car runs fine with 145K on the clock, does not burn oil and you cant beat the suspension on the Z51 84 if you like taking a fast turn.

It's merely a modified throttle body that GM (and others) used for years. They should be good (with minimal maintenance) for over 300k miles, as long as you don't get them hot or run them out of fluids.

I own an '82 with the Crossfire engine. The biggest problem is that with milage, the throttle shafts wear the aluminum throttle body which causes slop in the throttle linkage. The two throttle bodies aren't perfectly sychronized like they should be and that's why the car starts running poorly. The throttle bodies can have bushings installed to prevent the problem.

Do a google search, or someone here may have a link... there's a whole forum devoted to the Crossfire. Lots of very knowledgable people there.

gee, the engine itself is fine... like any engine, as it ages, the things attached to it get suspect... but from my perspective, the only people who say the L83 is junk are those that don't know anything about them.

strictly from my observations, they seem to be as durable as any small block... I have only ever heard of a coupe that have died permaturely.

there are also some cheap tricks you can do to the L83 to perk it up... Ask CFI, he knows them all...

The Cross Fire so far has been the most reliable thing on my car. Everything else has had issues but she runs well. It better though. It only has 36K on it.

I did just that a few weeks ago. 3500 miles round trip and drag raced it while I was there! Bought mine with 110k, now at 127k. It's getting auto-x'd tomorrow. got drag raced last week and I drive it every day. Horrible L83 Gotta love it!

That can't be the real color of the wheels. NOBODY would do that to a Corvette. I think they were just "photo-shopped" to match the date of the picture.

More crazy color wheels - three cars we built a few years ago. The colors do grow on you. Not the same old thing you see everyday.
