We are trying to get the transmission lowered from the car. We have slid the transmission back a few inches from the bellhousing. It looks like the transmission needs to come back even farther but the linkage box in the transmission tunnel is preventing it from sliding back anymore. From the pictures in the manual the input shaft looks pretty long and we can only see an inch of it. Whats the trick to getting it out?
Did you completly remove the C-beam from the car?? When I had my clutch changed in my 87, we did not remove the shift linkage, just disconnected it at the side plate.
With the C-beam gone, the tranny should come out. All of the exhaust system needs to be removed too. Unbolt at the manifolds and AIR tube, unbolt the pipes on the C-beam and at the muffler hangars and slide the entire exhaust assemb;y out of the way.
I followed the FSM and it came out quite easily. You remove the distributor and then the C-Beam completely. When that's done you can lower the tail of the transmission down enough to slide the trans out of the bellhousing. Make sure that when you get the engine at the right angle you support the rear of the oil pan with a jack and a block of wood cause without the trans there's nothing supporting the rear of the engine.
Got the tranny out yesterday --thanks for the advise. We moved the c beam over to the side and angled the trans down. Should be fun putting it back together-- I don't have a transmission jack. The rear c-beam bolts were seized so bad I had to cut a hole in the rear storage compartment, remove the nuts and bang the bolts out.
The clutch is full of grease/ sludge..... no wonder it was slipping.
I got a lead from a CF member that the oil is coming from a bad input shaft seal.
I'm concerned about the up and down play of the input shaft itself. I might have to bring it to a shop and check it out. To be continued.
On my rear bolts I pushed on the top of them with a flat piece of metal while spinning them with an impact gun. Didn't need to resort to cutting the body.
