I replaced the EGR pipe covering on my '91 with the MAM foil wrap. I posted here and was advised to remove the old insulation entirely. Came back from a short ride and I noticed that the plastic wrapping on my new spark plug wires contacts the pipe and it's melting. The spark plug wire is okay. The foil is so damn hot - not a good product in my opinion. Any suggestions as to what I could put between the pipe and the wire for insulation?
Plug socks - that would work perfect. I'll check Napa and other stores to see if I can buy just the one I need. I feel like removing the pipe. More trouble than it's worth. Glad it didn't burn my wire and only the plastic sleeve. Thanks
Bought socks today - larger ones made for the boot. Had to cut the ring at one end but it slid over the wire I needed. I'll test drive today and check to see if it works.
Stock size wires should never come close to the EGR tube insulation as the wires have spiral wrap around them and are held away form the pipe by two sheet-metal clamps on the side of engine.
I've had this problem for a while now on my '86 with my MSD wires routed beneath the EGR tube, the tube has burned my wire looms and the wires are beginning to crack.
Can anyone post pics of how they route their aftermarket wires around the EGR tube?

I used GM wires and paid to have them installed correctly. The #8 wire was up top and against the top EGR pipe. I put the sock on and drove it. The heat transferred right through the sock and was still melting the plastic. And this was a SHORT ride. I noticed a bracket path underneath the other three. Just below the valve cover. I was able to fish it through and rest it in place. It appears to go through this bracket and it's close but not touching the lower EGR tube. The lower tube still has the factory insulation too which is better than the MAM product. I'm glad I saw this. All wires are in place. I'll check on the next cruise. The '91 is all washed now and waiting for another haunt.
Note - the FSM was not very clear in this regard. I've seen better pics in previous post.
For aftermarket I have seen posts with beautiful looms and brackets. They are available.
I was just down reattaching the gauge coolant temp sender and decided to "adjust" my stock size TPIS wires a little to assure they didn't tough that stock insulation on the lower EGR tube section.
Though the spiral-wrap around those wires is a little melted in copla places the wires are still in good shape after 6yrs & 80k miles of use.
I think routing say MSG 8.5mm SuperConductor wires under the EGR tube would work ok if the looks keep the wires away from the tube insulation. Those wires are very heat resistant; I think they only require a small air gap to survive under that tube.
