When I sent my ST-10 out to get rebuilt and it came back, I recall there was a few degrees of play when turning the input shaft before the output shaft began to turn. At the absolute most, a few degrees though... Every time I've had the trans out, I always play around with it and as far as I can tell, it's still the same amount of play...

There's some rotational play and also radial play in the shaft. You should be able to rock it back and forth a bit.
I don't know how much is acceptable, but there's always some play, the design isn't capable of holding it tight, plus a little play can help compensate for a bellhousing that isn't dead-nuts centered on the motor.
