Pete, my 400 flexplate on my 383 has rubbed two slots in my dust cover. Is there another cover I can use that will clear the bigger flexplate? Thanks once more.
That is a good question. I have not yet run across that problem. The aftermarket has a plastic cove that I assume will work. You can alter the plastic one with a heat gun if it were close in spots.
I had to get a metal cover and beat it outward from the inside with a picking hamer then flaten out the divits from streaching it with a slotted hammer on an anvil....Old steel body work tools. It still has noticable bumps in it though, but it will streach the metal enough to clear.
I saw the plastic one on ebay but since Vette2Vette is right here in town I'm going to get another aluminum one and do what todd_vette87 suggested. Thanks to both of you.
USE THE TIN/STEELE cover NOT aluminum...Aluminum is a little harder to work unless you are used to it...It needs carbonized to soften it to strech and not crack...The tin one will strech some with-out that worry.
That was my first thought, I could be wrong but I don't remember the 700R4 being used behind a 400. According to Summit, Jegs, etc. the dust cover for a turbo 350-400 is different than the 700R4. I got another cover today from Vette2Vette and have already "modified" it to work. (creative use of ballpeen hammer)
The 700R4 was never offered behind a 400, yet you were able to use the flexplate. I think probably some "creative drilling" may have resulted in a better looking end product, but either way, your problem is solved.
