I have a 1993 coupe, six speed, tonight after driving for a while I was peacefully leaving a red light and I noticed a warning light I had never seen before flash on for a split second, just above the tachometer. It said "One to Four". I did a search and all i found was a C6 post about it. Does anyone have any experience with this light, and should it concern me?

Thanks for the knowledge.

its your CAG feature. It was designed years ago as a gas saving feature. I hated it, it could put you in a dangerous situation when you need to quick shift. It can easily be disabled by unpugging the connection by the transmission underneath. The light will come on but it won't force you to shift from one to four.
Sounds like he might already have the bypass installed. If not, you would actually feel the shifter not being allowed to go into 2nd whenever that light is on.
But even with the bypass installed, the light will still come on. You can safely ignore the light
Note: This is probably the number 1 mod manual transmission Corvette owners make. So, the chances are good that one of the previous owners has already by passed the CAGS.
I HATE the CAGS system. I have a 94 6 speed. When I first got the car I found myself actually grinding gears pretty often because when the shifter would not move it would throw off my timing or something. On the second attempt I would drop into second. It is a snap to put in just make sure to zip-tie it up from exhaust. The corner of mine is melted from sitting on pipes.
This is the feature that keeps the gas guzzler tax away. GM installed this in order to meet EPA standards. The whole idea is that in "normal" driving you shift straight to 4th. This is supposed to keep the rpm's low thus saving gas. "The light will come on when the coolant temperature is higher than 120 degrees. You are goiong 15 to 19 mph and you are at 21 % throttle or less." -From the manual.
I tried it once and it is not pretty. To avoid this, a) make sure you are more than 21% throttle (not always possible in traffic). b) shift into second before the light comes on. c) when taking off, press down on the clutch until the light comes off. d) while keeping the clutch pedal down, quickly shift into fourth then to second (do not let up on the clutch).
You can get a bypass for your ecu, but I have been pretty successful avoiding problems with the above methods. It has absolutely no effect when you are doing any type of "performance" driving.
I appreciate all the info. I have owned the car for about a year and this is the first time I have even noticed it. It was while I was in traffic, leaving a red light. The car is not my daily driver, and I have never even noticed the light while at the track. I was just worried that there might be something wrong with the transmission or something, but you all have put my fears to rest. Again, thanks for the information.

Easiest way to avoid the 1-4 light is to remove your mufflers or get a nice sounding exhaust. Keeps your go foot planted more firmly to enjoy the exhaust note, and usually you wind out first gear more so you avoid the 1-4 lockout. (That's what I did, and I hardly ever get stuck shifting 1-4).
Although I do notice I get stuck doing 1-4 when I'm leaving a red light and making a left turn, with a car in front of me. Just always seems to be the case when I'm ready to go into 2 the CAGS system is telling me to go to 4... oh well.
Does the automatic 1-to-4 shift only apply to automatics or to manual transmissions as well? I have never seen this light come on in my 89 with the 4 speed automatic. If someone has already disconnected the plug at my transmission, does the dash light still come on (but no 1-to-4 shift occurs) or does unplugging the connector disable both the dash light and the actual shifting? I've been curious about this for a while.

It would be cool if you crawled under the car(after it is safely and securely elevated) to see what is going on under there.
Have a looksee on the driver's side of the trans and look for the cylindrical shaped solenoid sticking out of the center.
Mine has the wires completely cut-off
Yours could be unplugged or it could have the aftermarket inline bypass installed.
I nnoticed this feature in my car manual but have never seen this light come on, I guess its disconnected or else I rev it up past where this feature works in first gear, I have never noticed it light up on my dash in my 95 vette
