I've taken a transfer to Dallas (Denton) Texas. I undersand cars there have to be inspected for smog. Is that correct? If that is the case, I think I have a big problem. I run an LT1 396 with big cam, AFR heads, no air pump, non-smog headers, no cats, alky injection, and 18 psi of boost. Local Dallas members, any help or referrals you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
Could you keep an address in Flordia and keep the car licensed there? I have oftened considered doing this because of emissions inspections required in our area.
Welcome to Texas! The emissions testing is based on the county in which the vehicle is registered in. That is why once the car is registered you can't get it inspected at a shop outside of that county. The amount of emissions allowed by each car is determined by the number of cars in that county. The more cars in the county the lower the allowable emissions.
I live in Kaufman County and it sounds like you will be in Denton County so I can't comment on the severity of the emissions testing. I will bet however, that you will be subject to some degree of testing and from the sound of it your car may have a problem.
Emissions testing is performed in all "attainment" counties, and any county that contacts an attainment county. Attainment counties are determined by the amount of pollution in that county, whether from industrial, automotive or other. With that being said, most counties in TX, either in or around a metropolitan area will be subject to emissions testing.
Additionally, you can get your car inspected in other counties besides the one you live provided they test to the same level (or greater) than your county. What that means is that if you live in an attainment county, then you will have to be tested in either your own county, or a county that is an attainment county. If you live in a non-attainment county, you can pretty much get tested anywhere.
Put high flow cats on your car amd build a engine management program that passes emissions. I upload my program on the emissions dyno rollers, and re-load the original program back on the car prior to leaving the inspection station. I am legal when I pass emissions testing, and still manage to street drive a decently fast vette. 9 second, emissions and street legal vette.
thanks for the posts. do they do an underhood inspection in attainment counties?
Visual inspection is part of either inspection process. Theoretically, all factory emissions equipment must be in place, and "non-factory" parts must have EO stickers. Typically not much of an issue, unless your car looks like it is far from stock. Cats are a must.
