Default Strange engine/starting problem

Go to start the car and when I hit the key it makes about a 1/4 revolution and stops. Not like the starter quit but more like something locked up. Does this two or three times and then all the sudden it goes ahead and starts. Misses somewhat and burns oil (smokes) when i hit the accelerator (i.e. low vacumn). Switch it off and start it back up and it's like nothing happened. No starting problems, no smoke, no missing (although it does occasionally fell like there might be a very very slight miss)....

This is completely intermittant...

Anyone every run across this?

90 vette right?

It sounds like the starter or the solenoid need to be looked at. Check the connections on both and wiring involved. Might want to have the starter checked. If none of these, then check the ignition switch.

Do you know for sure the smoke is oil? It sounds like it could be unburnt fuel. If it happens again check the color and smell of the exhaust smoke.

blue..oil
black...fuel
white...condensation or coolant.

Pull the plugs and see if any are wet with gasoline. If so, do the checks for leaky injectors.

RACE ON!!!

Definitely oil.

I've had solenoids go out before and know the sound/feeling you're thinking of but this is more like there's actually something that physically locks up and causes the starter to hang or dis-engage. Although that said, I'll check there first anyway.

Thanks

On my 95, every now and then when I turn the key, I can hear a slight "clunking" sound. It's like the starter tries to turn the flywheel, but hangs up. I turn the key again and it starts right up. It only happens every now and then, so it's not a big deal for now.

That's exactly it! Im ny case it actually turns it a little first.

If I figure it out I'll let you know... In the meantime I guess the only thing we can do is to hope the other breaks down first... (your's is 5 years newer... it'll probably be me... )
