just got finished pulling moter and tranny out of the vette yesterday, was not fun!! i have a blowen head gasket and rod knock and it leaks like an sob (dont look at me i bought it that way, dont know how some one could do that to an LT4 soo i thought i would save it.) any way i thought while i had everthing apart i would do some mods. So should i get a new cam, shifter, exhaust, any intake mods. Any ideas and suggestions would help a lot.
thank you for saving such a fine and RARE car!!! I checked your profile, and to find a vette with the lack of options! Wow! That is a real cool find! Way to go! next thing your gonna tell me is that it has crank windows!
at the very least, if it is that abused, I would do a lightened flywheel and new hi-po clutch assembly. make sure the rear is ok... it is stout, but if allowed to over heat, the case softens, and the bearings spin. not a good thing.
Use the Hurst shifter. It was designed by one of our own Forum members.
your knock is a bearing... so you must rebuild. I would consider a stroker kit, if you have the $$$!!
remember - the better the part, the better the engine.
I don't know all the specs for the best parts... too many years of dealing with Hondas dulls ones perspective!!! But I suspect there are others here who can make the correct suggestions.
You can do a stroker motor for it. While you have it apart, there are a number of things you can do to it. Here is what I would look into, depending on your funds:
Our stage II heads
Intake Porting
Custom Camshaft taylored to what you desire
Forged bottom end and rebuild with splayed mains and billet caps
STAR Stage III clutch
B&M or Hurst shifter
Exhaust and headers
COmputer programming
Injectors 30#
That should get you to a HP level that will put a smile ear to ear every time you get in the car whether it is to go get some groceries or head to the race track!
Let me know if you have any questions or would like any information. I would be more than happy to help.
It depends on what you want out of the motor. The LT4 has very good heads and intake. You could just have the heads redone and do a bowl porting on them. Put in GMs LT4 hot cam and fix the remaining engine problems.
Another option would be to go with a stroker motor. Then you'll probably want to have the heads ported. Use the same LT4 cam. Get a new rotating assy.
Thanks for all of the ideas guys. anyone have an idea on how much that hot cam cost, I work at a chevy dealer and i asked the parts guys to look in gm performance parts book for it but he couldnt find it.
And come to think of it i have been there about 3 years now and this has been the only c4 i have seen with no options except the LT4. I have seen 2 Lt4 c4's come in both fully optioned one conv. and 2 ZR1's and even a few crossfires.
I have not done the install myself, but from what I can gather from the others who have...the factory rockers are nonadjustable and use studs that are 10mm. You can use aftermarket set of Crane gold (self aligning) and set of 3/8 studs. The Cranes are nearly identical to your current ones-just adjustable.
I would like to look into set of Comp Cams Stainless Steel with 7/16 inch studs though, but not sure they are available. Since you have to buy the studs-the 7/16 inch are just as easy as 3/8...I'm sure others will have better info.
The Comp Cams stainless non self-alligning ones and 7/16" stud are the way to go. That is the strongest and lightest setup we have found. You will also need guideplates and hardened pushrods for the non self-alligning RR's. We have then in stock and ready to ship. Let me know if I can help,
