Default Help! Need engine bay item identification

So I was taking my car for a run around the neighborhood and I opened up the hood for an inspection- two surprises came after that. One, I found that the cable attached to an engine bay component had nothing holding it there and just flopped loose.

Two, I found oil on my garage floor!!!

Here is the piece I am talking about

And here is the cable, that attaches to the actuator of the diaphram.

Can anyone tell me what that is and what it / the cable does? As far as I can tell its connected to the throttle, but that's all I know.

Also, if anyone has any ideas where a small oil leak would have come from (lines up about with the engine side of the firewall), ideas would be appreciated. Im about to get my tranny rebuilt, the last thing I need is an engine rebuild too

1. Cruise control servo.
2. Hard to say but my first guess would be intake manifold.

That gadget is yout Cruise Control Servo.
There's a little chain that holds it to the end of the bellows. You can probably clip it back on there.

The oil leak 'could' be anywhere but.... it's most likely a valve cover leak.
It could be leaking around the back side of the intake manifold.
I'd rather it be a valve cover gasket for ya. Easier and cheaper to fix than most anything else.

So what difference does it make putting it in one hole or another in that bracket?

Default oil leak

If you have the water-oil cooler, sandwiched between the block and the oil filter, the gasket for it just loses it's elasticity, and compresses under the oil pressure.
The gasket is no longer available from GM, but you can get it through NAPA, it's like $2.50

Two famous places for oil leaks are from the VCs as well as just behind the intake base.

Here a very strong light and small mirror will help checking for leaks.

You want to hook up the cable/chain so that all slack is removed but the throttle remains closed.
