Default Fuel Gauge Woes

I left for work this fine mourning and I had about 1/4 tank of fuel. I drove approx 7 miles, and as I was pulling into my work place I now had a way full tank!. I have a 88 vert. I need some advice on wire colors and where the connectors are. I pulled the panel out at the gas cap tonight after work. Found a 3 wire connector. My guess is the black wire is ground. The other 2, ?. One is maybe for the pump? one for the sender? Also how do I get to the wiring connector at the back of the digital display? Is it the pink wire coming into the display for the sending unit? One last thing, where is the wire routed through the car? Thanks much for any and all help.

First I have to find out what it is. Then I'll give it a go. Seriously though, I really don't trust the "fix in a bottle". I think taking it apart and cleaning up the sending unit makes far more sense. I just hope it fixes my problem. I just hate driving not knowing if I'll be pushing soon.
