Default rear wheel bearing damage?

A couple of weeks ago I had an unfortunate encounter with a guardrail on my way to work. The collision bent and cracked the rim of one rear wheel and bent the tie rod. Upon inspecting the rear suspension before it went to the shop I noticed that the wheel bearing had some play to it as well.

When I got the car back I noticed that the wheel and tie rod had been replaced but not the bearing. I was told by the shop owner that the chassis shop did not find a problem and noted that my U-joints needed replaced but were not a result of the accident.

Since I do all my own work on the car I know that that bearing was fine before the collision but now I have to take it to another shop to have them prove it was a result of the collision so the insurance will fix it.

The question is..... does anyone out there feel that the play I see in the bearing could be due to a strike to the wheel? Has anyone ever ran across this before?

Absolutely it could be.

These bearings are fragile. The bearings and U-joints are part of the suspension, the Ujoints make up part of the upper control arm, aka halfshaft, and saw a huge impact load when the wheel broke on the curb.
