I'm interested in buying a '95 C4 (mostly for the gf to drive around town). I can get it for a really good price but the overdrive on the tranny (automatic) is slipping. Now I wonder, how much would a transmission rebuild cost? I've never done a transmission change on a C4 myself even though I have done a few in C3's...so I wonder.. how difficult is it to change the transmission in a C4 yourself. Can it be done in a regular garage with jack stands and without a lift? Any special, unusual tools needed? How many hours of work? How much would a shop charge for the labor to pull and install it?
For special tools you'll need a swivel socket adapter and a long socket extension. Other than that make sure you get the correct size wrench for the tranny cooler lines so you don't strip them. Its not all that difficult. My best time so far is 2 hours, for your first time I'd estimate around 4 to get it out if you take your time.

Hmmm. doesn't sound like a big job.. Sounds like something that I'll be able to do by myself.. I've never done any big jobs on the C4's that I've owned..
I think I remember paying about 2,000 at the dealership. I also bought a 2800 stall torque converter and shift kit for them to install. Those were not included in the price. If I did it again I would buy something heavy duty or try to uppgrade to a 4L80e. Don't forget the transcooler. It's a cheap part and will extend the life of the trans.

If I'll end up buying the car, it'll not be driven very hard as it'll be used most of the time by my gf.. I might use it as a Corvette Challenge backup car...
Not sure yet if I'll buy it.. Will check out the car tomorrow... I don't even know how bad the transmission is slipping. I just know what the owner told me on the phone..
In my area
$450 to remove and replace(13 qts of fluid included in this price)
$800-$1000 for a stock bench build with minor upgrades
$150-$200 for a stock converter
Performance stuff adds to these prices.

thanks... I wonder how much just the rebuild would be without the labor to remove and re-install as this sounds like a task that I can do...
Well.. will see tomorrow if the car is even interesting otherwise. I've only seen a pic of the car and will test-drive it tomorrow...
The shop I used warranted the rebuild for 1 full year. So you may be better off finding a really good shop for tranny rebuilds and just paying the extra to remove and reinstall provided they have a year warranty
