I've heard that but does it mean they're backwards compatible too? The 85 and 86+ MAFs are different in the signals they produce for the ECM.

Yep, I've read the same thing, but I've posted several times about my experience with the K&N. I wasn't surprised at K&N's response, afterall, what else could they say unless they were willing to kill their market share. LOL
I installed it out of the box and a few weeks later happened to hook up Diacom and noticed 108 BLMs. After checking everything I could to bring them back to the range of 128, I pulled the MAF.
I gave it a few shots of carb cleaner, buttoned everything back up and the BLMs returned to normal.
So I removed all the red oil from the K&N filter and haven't had a problem since. BLMs remain in the 126/130 range for several years now. If "crankcase" or "combustion chamber" oiling was the source it would have re-coated the MAF wires by now.
Anyway, that's my experience, in spite of K&N's denial.

My throttle blades get dirty on the BACK side, but are squeaky clean on the front side, so I find it hard to believe that something is coming back out of the engine and getting on the MAF wire.
